Around the World in 80 Purées: Hansel and Gretel Porridge

Around the World in 80 Purées: Hansel and Gretel Porridge

This recipe comes from one of my favorite cookbooks for baby food. Around the World in 80 Purées by Leena Saini was a book I had on my baby registry and I’m so grateful we have it. I always want to know what other people in other cultures do and feeding a baby was no exception. It is great for ideas to introduce many different spices to a child.

This is a very easy recipe. Millet traditionally is grown in Africa and Asia according to Wikipedia but I’ve seen recipes from all over the world using it. This one is a German variation.

First you boil milk, water and vanilla powder. I couldn’t find vanilla powder at the store but it is easily ordered online. Then you add the millet and simmer for approximately 20 minutes.

Once it’s cooked, add applesauce. For a fruity variation, add some type of jam to your preference. I added blackberry jam.

My baby liked it and I also thought it was good. It is very different from oatmeal. The vanilla added more flavor than expected and the recommended amount of jam could probably have been increased.
